For Patients

What to expect before your surgery

What you need to do

After anaesthetic, you must have a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you overnight. If this cannot be organised, please contact the Day Hospital at least 1 week prior to your admission.

If you do not have an escort, or overnight carer, then your procedure may be cancelled.

Commence fasting at the time advised by your doctor. Importantly, you must not consume ANYTHING other than water for at least 6 hours prior to your admission time. You may take your regular medications, as advised by your treating doctor, with a sip of water. If you have any questions about how you should take your regular medications, please contact your referring doctor. If you are taking diabetic medication, please discuss with your Anaesthetist how they should be taken prior to surgery.

Remember, for 24 hours after an anaesthetic, you will not be able to:

  • Drive a vehicle
  • Drink alcohol
  • Operate machinery
  • Make important decisions
  • Sign legal documents

What to bring on the day:

  • Insulin medications or inhalers you are currently prescribed
  • A medication chart if coming from a care facility
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing.
  • A pair of non-prescription sunglasses
  • Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardianship and Advance Care Directive documentation (if applicable)

What not to bring on the day:

  • Please leave ALL valuables at home.
  • Please DO NOT wear make-up, nail polish, or jewellery.
  • Do not wear contact lens to hospital; wear your prescription glasses.

Smoking

Please ensure that you do not smoke on the day of your procedure. Smoking is not permitted on site.

Location and parking

Toowoomba Private Day Hospital is conveniently located in central Toowoomba with easy access for patients. There is ample free on-site parking available.

What if I don't have private health insurance?

Public sector waiting times for all different surgeries have continued to escalate in recent years. Although you may not hold private health insurance, you can still be treated in a private facility. You may choose to jump the queue and have your procedure earlier by coming to a private facility as an uninsured patient. There are hospital fees associated with having your procedure at a private day hospital as an uninsured patient. To make your timely healthcare more accessible, we offer interest free finance options for your hospital fees. Please contact us to find out more.
